    Short answer: yes — but not the kind of metadata you'd expect. AI-generated images almost never carry camera EXIF data like GPS coordinates, a lens, or a shutter speed, because no camera was ever involved. Instead, a growing number of them now carry provenance metadata — most importantly C2PA "Content Credentials" — that explicitly marks the image as AI-generated and records which tool made it. The complication: many images strip out even this, and most social platforms remove it on upload. So "does an AI image have metadata?" often depends less on the generator and more on where the image has travelled since.

    Here's what AI images actually carry in 2026, why GPS is always missing, and how to inspect any image yourself.

    Why AI images have no GPS or camera EXIF

    Regular photos store a block of EXIF metadata: camera make and model, exposure settings, timestamp, and — if location was on — GPS coordinates.

    An AI image has none of that origin story. There was no sensor, no lens, and no place where a shutter opened. So the fields that normally hold camera and location data are simply empty. If you see a photorealistic image with zero camera EXIF and no GPS, that absence is itself a mild signal it may be synthetic — though plenty of edited or exported real photos also lose their EXIF, so it's a hint, not proof.

    The metadata AI images do carry: C2PA Content Credentials

    The real story in 2026 is provenance metadata. C2PA Content Credentials are a cryptographically signed manifest embedded in the file that records where content came from and whether AI was involved. Because it's signed, it's tamper-evident — altering it breaks the signature.

    The key field is the IPTC Digital Source Type assertion. When an image is fully AI-generated, it's tagged with the value trainedAlgorithmicMedia, which is the machine-readable way of saying "made by a generative model."

    Adoption has accelerated sharply:

    • OpenAI attaches C2PA Content Credentials to images generated by ChatGPT and its API, tagging them as AI-created.
    • Google (Gemini and Imagen) tags output with SynthID and C2PA.
    • Adobe Firefly signs its images with Adobe Content Credentials.
    • Midjourney has adopted C2PA across its outputs.

    This is being driven partly by regulation — the EU AI Act's transparency rules and California's SB 942 both push toward machine-readable AI disclosure — so expect coverage to keep widening.

    SynthID: the watermark that survives when metadata doesn't

    There's a reason the big players pair C2PA with SynthID rather than trusting metadata alone. Metadata is fragile. Screenshot an image, re-save it, or run it through a compressor and the embedded C2PA manifest can vanish.

    SynthID takes a different approach: it hides an invisible watermark in the pixels themselves, so the "this is AI" signal survives screenshots and re-encoding that would strip a metadata block. Google applies SynthID across its own generators — Gemini, Imagen and Veo — and is extending it to partners. Think of it as belt-and-braces: C2PA carries the rich detail, SynthID keeps a durable signal when the detail is stripped.

    Why so many AI images still show no metadata

    If provenance is spreading, why do so many AI images you find online come up blank?

    • Not every tool embeds it. Many smaller or self-hosted generators (and lots of Stable Diffusion setups) write no provenance metadata at all.
    • Social platforms strip metadata on upload. This is the big one. Most consumer platforms remove EXIF, XMP, and C2PA data when you post — so an image that left the generator with full Content Credentials arrives on someone's feed completely clean.
    • Anyone can remove it. A signed credential doesn't stop a person from re-exporting a "clean" copy with the metadata deleted.

    So an AI image with no metadata is completely normal, and the absence of a Content Credential does not prove an image is real. It only means the provenance signal didn't survive — or was never added.

    How to check if an image is AI (and read its metadata)

    You can inspect any image yourself in under a minute:

    1. Read the raw metadata. Drop the file into an EXIF viewer. Look for two things: an empty camera/GPS section (consistent with AI), and any provenance fields or a Digital Source Type of trainedAlgorithmicMedia.
    2. Check for Content Credentials. C2PA-aware verifiers can display the signed manifest — the issuing tool, the AI assertion, and the edit history — when it's present.
    3. Don't over-trust a blank result. If metadata is missing, fall back to watermark detection (SynthID checks are rolling into Google Search, Chrome, and the Gemini app) and old-fashioned visual scrutiny.

    And remember the limitation that ties this whole topic together: metadata tells you what a file still carries, not the full truth of its origin. A missing credential proves nothing; a present one tells you a lot.

    The bottom line
