We build privacy-first tools for photo metadata — extracting, editing, and removing GPS data directly in your browser.

If you need to find where a photo was taken, add GPS coordinates to an image, or strip location data before sharing — there are dozens of tools that claim to do it. We tested 10 of them to see which ones actually deliver.

Most geotagging tools fall into one of two categories: they either upload your photos to a remote server for processing, or they run entirely in your browser. That distinction matters more than most people realize — especially if the photos contain sensitive location data.

Here is what we found after testing each tool with the same set of 20 geotagged JPEG and HEIC files.

    GeoTag.world — Best All-in-One (View, Edit, Remove)

GeoTag.world was the only tool in our test that could view full EXIF data, edit GPS coordinates, AND remove location metadata — all without uploading files to a server.

We uploaded a batch of 20 iPhone photos. The GPS coordinates appeared on Google Maps within a second. The EXIF panel showed camera make, model, shutter speed, ISO, timestamp, and software — everything you would get from ExifTool but without touching a command line.

The privacy architecture is the key differentiator. Everything runs client-side in the browser. We verified this by disconnecting from the internet mid-session — the tool kept working. No other web-based tool in this list passed that test except GeoMakers and FreeGeoTagger.

Viewing is free, no account needed. Editing or removing GPS costs credits ($5 for 10 photos). Credits never expire.

    • Supports JPEG, PNG, HEIC, WebP, TIFF
    • Map view with instant coordinate plotting
    • Full EXIF metadata display
    • Browser-only — files never leave your device

Pic2Map — Free GPS Viewer (View Only, No Editing)

Pic2Map is one of the oldest online EXIF viewers. We uploaded the same test photos and got GPS coordinates plotted on a map within a few seconds. The EXIF display showed camera details, aperture, shutter speed, and timestamp.

The limitation is clear: Pic2Map is strictly view-only. There is no way to edit coordinates, strip metadata, or process multiple files. And every photo is uploaded to their server for processing — there is no client-side option.

For a quick, free GPS lookup when privacy is not a concern, Pic2Map works. For anything beyond viewing, you need a different tool.

    • Free, no account needed
    • View GPS on map + camera EXIF details
    • Cannot edit or remove any metadata
    • No batch processing
    • Server-side upload required

GeoImgr — Established GPS Editor ($9.90/mo)

GeoImgr has been running for over 10 years and is specifically built for adding GPS coordinates to photos. In our test, the free tier let us geotag 5 images before hitting the daily limit. The paid plan at $9.90/month removes that cap.

The Google Places search feature — which lets you type an address and auto-fill coordinates — is disabled on the free tier because the API costs became unsustainable for free users. That is a significant limitation since manually entering latitude and longitude is tedious.

GeoImgr cannot remove metadata or view full EXIF details beyond GPS. It does one thing — add coordinates — and charges monthly for unlimited access.

    • Free: 5 photos/day, no address search
    • Paid: $9.90/month unlimited
    • Adds GPS to photos, cannot remove it
    • Supports JPEG, PNG, WebP, HEIC
    • Server-side upload required

Jimpl — Free EXIF Viewer with Metadata Removal

Jimpl displayed the most complete EXIF breakdown in our test — camera info, GPS data, copyright fields, image dimensions, and color space. It also lets you download a cleaned copy of the photo with all metadata stripped, which is useful for privacy protection.

The tradeoff is that every photo is uploaded to Jimpl's server. They state files are deleted after 24 hours, but your images do leave your device during that window. For sensitive photos, that may not be acceptable.

Jimpl cannot edit specific GPS coordinates — it is either view everything or strip everything.

    • Free, no account needed
    • Most detailed EXIF display in our test
    • Can strip all metadata (download cleaned copy)
    • Cannot edit specific fields
    • 50MB upload limit
    • Server-side processing

GeoMakers — Best for Local SEO Geotagging

GeoMakers is purpose-built for local SEO. It lets you add GPS coordinates, keywords, descriptions, and watermarks to photos — all the metadata that helps with Google Business Profile optimization.

Like GeoTag.world, it processes images in the browser — no server uploads. We tested the free tier: 5 photos per day, which is enough for small projects. The $9.99/month plan unlocks batch processing for up to 50 images at once.

GeoMakers cannot view existing EXIF data or remove GPS metadata. It is purely an add-coordinates tool, optimized for SEO workflows.

    • Free: 5 photos/day
    • Paid: $9.99/month unlimited
    • Adds GPS, keywords, descriptions, watermarks
    • Cannot view or remove existing metadata
    • Browser-based — no server uploads

ExifTool — Most Powerful (Command Line Only)

ExifTool is the industry standard. It supports over 400 file formats and can read, write, and modify virtually every metadata field that exists. It is used by forensic investigators, law enforcement agencies, and professional photographers worldwide.

In our test, ExifTool extracted metadata fields that no other tool displayed — including camera-specific proprietary tags and embedded thumbnail data.

The barrier is the command line. There is no graphical interface. Installing it, learning the syntax, and running batch commands takes real technical knowledge. For developers and power users, nothing else comes close. For everyone else, the learning curve is prohibitive.

    • Free, open source
    • Read/write/modify any metadata field
    • 400+ file formats supported
    • Full batch processing with scripting
    • Command-line only — no GUI
    • Runs locally — complete privacy

GeoTagSEO — Local SEO Focused ($8.33/mo+)

GeoTagSEO is similar to GeoMakers — built for adding GPS coordinates, keywords, and ALT text to photos for local SEO. The paid plans include automatic coordinate lookup by business name or address, which saves time when geotagging photos for multiple locations.

In our test, the free tier was too limited for meaningful use. The paid plans start at $8.33/month. It cannot view existing EXIF data or remove metadata.

    • Free tier with heavy limitations
    • Paid: from $8.33/month
    • Adds GPS, keywords, ALT text, descriptions
    • Automatic address-to-coordinate lookup (paid)
    • Cannot view or remove existing metadata

FastGeoTagger & FreeGeoTagger — Simple and Free

FastGeoTagger and FreeGeoTagger are minimal, free tools for adding GPS coordinates to photos. Both support batch uploads and require no account.

In our test, they did exactly what they promised — added coordinates to files quickly and without friction. FreeGeoTagger runs entirely in the browser (no server uploads). Neither tool can view existing EXIF data, display photos on a map, or remove metadata.

These are single-purpose tools. If you already know the coordinates you want to embed, they work well.

    • Completely free, no account
    • Batch upload supported
    • FreeGeoTagger: browser-based (no uploads)
    • Cannot view existing metadata or map locations
    • Cannot remove GPS data

    GeoTag.co.in — Basic Free Geotagging

GeoTag.co.in is a minimal free tool for adding GPS coordinates to photos. No registration, no payment. In our test, it handled basic JPEG geotagging without issues.

It has no EXIF viewing, no metadata removal, no batch processing, and no map interface. It does one thing at a basic level.

    • Free, no registration
    • Adds GPS coordinates to photos
    • Cannot view or remove metadata
    • No batch processing
    • No map view

Our Verdict: Which Tool Should You Actually Use?

After testing all 10 tools with the same set of photos, the answer depends on what you need:
